Backstage at Bestival 2013 – RIGHT GUARDS OFF-GUARD Gigs

September 26th, 2013 + 10:09 AM  ·  ClashMusic

Clash has been all over the place this summer - and yes, we actually had a summer in the UK. What a treat it was.

Anyway, while out and about at a variety of festivals, we collaborated with Right Guard to run a series of Off Guard Gigs - acoustic performances from a spread of really rather good acts. These ran at Bestival and Rockness, and were the setting for a series of lovely sessions.

From number-one newcomer John Newman to breakthrough group London Grammar, via returning greats Franz Ferdinand and poet-cum-MC Scroobius Pip (pictured), there's a lil' something for everyone amongst our subsequent videos. (Unless you're super weird and just hate music. In which case: what are you even doing here?)

£6.50 ADVANCE TICKETS: http://www.skiddle.com/e/11946860/

FIRST 50 BUYERS RECEIVE A FREE COPY OF CLASH

After a sold out show with Bipolar Sunshine and Benin City, our sister clubnight EASTnotEAST continues its new monthly residency at Birthdays on Wednesday September 4th with a smattering of live electronic folk and abnormal beats. Fyfe, Jamie Isaac and Nick Brewer will all grace the stage for full live performances, and the entire night will be sewn together by the divine micro-DJ sets of Somerset producer, DJ God Hard. September 4th will also mark the release of Clash Magazine issue 88, and the first fifty advance ticket buyers will receive a FREE copy on arrival at the venue.

FYFE
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zLQt-vR8WA)
Fyfe has garnered mass attention with the delicate and experimental pop sounds of his ‘Solace EP’. The coming months will see even more new music, and his most recent track ‘Conversations’ might be the best so far, manifesting as a haunting ballad of glassy vocals and chattering beats.

JAMIE ISAAC
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CX1pkDs5XIA)
The 18-year-old originally became known for his collaborative work with King Krule, but has now acquired a solid solo following since the release of his masterful ‘I Will Be Cold Soon EP’. From that release, ‘Softly Draining Seas’ has become his clarion call, a dark and warped piano number full of clicking percussion and reverbed vocals.

NICK BREWER
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9bHm4vCqSA)
A new young lyricist from the streets of Essex, whose poetic rap prose is set upon a backdrop of hazy hip-hop soundscapes. Nick’s EP comes out in mid-September and features Jacob Banks, George The Poet and Joel Baker.

Advance tickets are £6.50 from Skiddle, or £8 on the door. If you attended the last EASTnotEAST, then check your emails for a special loyalty discount code.

KANADA and Clash Magazine are proud to reveal that Kirin J Callinan will be playing a free and spontaneous show at The Old Blue Last in Shoreditch on Thursday, August 8th.

Read his 9/10 album review on ClashMusic.com HERE

Kirin J Callinan has his own theory that the three great Australian bands, the Mt. Rushmore of Oz if you will, all have a criminal aspect to them: AC/DC = gang of outcasts raising hell, INXS = sexual deviancy, lasciviousness, and Nick Cave = murderous poet. Kirin has elements of all three, and in time, he will be the fourth face on that rock.

This free show nods towards his live performance at London’s Visions Festival this weekend, alongside Fucked Up, Jeffrey Lewis, Cloud Nothings, Koreless, Iceage, The Haxan Cloak, Micachu and Tirzah. You can buy tickets here: visionsfestival.com

Clash Magazine & EASTnotEAST present

BIPOLAR SUNSHINE
BENIN CITY + TUESDAY BORN

Thursday, August 8th @ Birthdays, Dalston

FACEBOOK EVENT https://www.facebook.com/events/585849721435384

£5 ADVANCE TICKETS: RECEIVE A FREE COPY OF CLASH: http://www.skiddle.com/events/11906812/

On August 8th, Clash Magazine returns to the scintillatingly soft and pulsating underbelly of East London for a night of live music from three of the biggest new acts around. Bipolar Sunshine, Benin City and Tuesday Born will all grace the stage for full live performances, with all dots joined together by the voracious micro-DJ sets of disgraced Glasgow selector Mr Mafro (formerly of chaotic African clubnight; Kinky Afro).

After a loyal and treasured spell at The Shacklewell Arms, August will see us migrate down the road to Birthdays. We’ll never forget The Shacklewell, and it’s fairy-lit smoking garden, but change must be embraced. August 8th will also mark the release of Clash Magazine issue 87, and the first fifty advance ticket buyers will receive a free copy on arrival at the venue. Purchase here:

Bipolar Sunshine occupies headline slot. The Manchester lad hasn’t put a foot wrong since going solo, constantly churning out an impressive slew of Afrobeat electro and sunny guitar lines. And his recent A$AP Rocky tribute revealed a delicate set of pipes that nobody quite expected...

Supporting, are two acts from forward-thinking indie label Audio Doughnuts. The first, Tuesday Born, is a 21 year old jazz based pianist and producer with a bubbling penchant for soulful r&b. He draws his musical inspiration from two long spells in Columbia and Ghana, and both cultures manifest subtly on recent track ‘Wake’.

The most arresting performance of the night will undoubtedly come from main support Benin City. Led by Joshua Idehen, a bastion of London’s spoken word scene, the group are a frenetic mesh of drums, sax, beats and rhymes. Their album drops on July 1st.

Hook and The Twin Album Launch Catch, London 08/07/13

SUPPORT FROM CLASH DJ’s
TICKETS HERE  http://skdl.it/15y78TK PRICE - £3

“An effortless epic” – Artrocker
“Instant groove!” – Zane Lowe
“Wonderful pop music, and of course deeply British” – CLASH

Hook & The Twin are set to release their highly anticipated 10 track debut album Never Ever Ever on the 7th July 2013 through new indie label Dancing Coins.
Hook & The Twin are drummer Marcus Efstratiou and singer/writer/multi-instrumentalist Tom Havelock. Friends since childhood, the pair started playing in bands together from the age of 15, honing their skills as a restless, Kraut-locked rhythm section. The seeds of HOOK & THE TWIN were sown during long late-night sessions in their woodland rehearsal room, when Tom would layer distorted melodies and drones over Marcus' drumming using an array of instruments and effects pedals, creating mantra-like arcs of sound over which they strung their uniquely deformed pop songs.
Previous singles Bang Bang Cherry, Tribes and We’re So Light gained great support from the likes of Zane Lowe, Rob Da Bank and Steve Lamacq along with praise from publications including The Independent, Clash and Drowned in Sound. Along the way they’ve played with Everything Everything, Django Django and Post War Years, and performed at The Great Escape, Secret Garden Party and Offset festivals to name a few - as well as a packed headline show at France’s notorious Transmusicales festival.
Never Ever Ever was written and recorded in various unexpected locations in and around London: a vast empty concrete basement; an abandoned school theatre; and right underneath a nocturnal Nigerian church in full flow on a Peckham industrial estate. The album was produced with Andy Ramsay (Stereolab, Add N to X) and mixed by rising producer Jim Anderson (Cold Specks, The Twilight Sad, 2:54). The album further includes production by Neil Davidge (Massive Attack) on track They’ll Get Your Head.
The record conjures an English alt.pop landscape that is by turns spectral and anthemic – an exhilarating and multi-layered affair. With influences ranging from Can and Harmonia to Talk Talk and Matthew Dear, the album features a vast range of sounds, instruments and voices, as it moves from the woozy house of We’re So Light, through the broad psychedelia of Stone, to Recklessly’s slow pulsing atmospherics. These tracks, along with current new single, the synth-driven That Was A Day, translate the Hook & The Twin sound perfectly: big spacious sounds, impeccable production and amazingly compelling vocals.
Never Ever Ever is set for release on the 7th of July  through Dancing Coins.
